Adventures in Wilmington

While it's true that Zach and I did a semi-embarrassing amount of teenage soap opera creeping on Saturday, we also stepped it up in the "educational outings" department. As we finished up our One Tree Hill extravaganza and began leaving the River Court (which conveniently shares a parking lot with the USS North Carolina...), Zach looked (false, "looked" is not a strong enough word. Let's try "gazed"...) at the ship and said that he'd love to come back and tour it one day. I nonchalantly mentioned that it's open every day of the year, even Christmas, and that we could both go for a total of $22. Zach gave me a "how-in-the-world-do-you-know-this?" look, to which I returned a "I-clearly-looked-it-up-in-advance-because-I-know-my-history-slash-military-loving-boyfriend-just-a-little-bit" look :)

During WWII, the USS North Carolina participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific theater & became the most decorated U.S. battleship of the war (with 15 battle stars). Let's be honest: I know that only because I just Wikipedia'ed it. Zach could tell you much more, as he took the time to read all of the informational signs posted around the ship. I avoided all text and simply tried to focus on not passing out -- needless to say, I won't be going on a cruise any time soon.

All seasickness aside, I loved getting to tour the decks. Pictures simply cannot convey the immensity of the ship; I would get so incredibly lost if I ever had to live here.

Boyfriend was in heaven as he patiently waited in lines with 5 year olds for his turn to to press buttons & knobs, turn dials, and play make believe ship captain :)

Interestingly enough, this wasn't the first time I had toured the USS North Carolina. I visited the battleship eight years ago while on my 8th grade class trip. Ladies & gentlemen, I present to you insanely cool 14-year-old Beth:

with my equally insanely cool lifelong classmate, Victoria :)

Some things clearly never change.

:)

I may or may not have geeked out a little (read: a lot) when we stumbled upon the mail room on the ship...

...and I also geeked out when we found the tiny section of the ship devoted to the Marines who served amongst the sailors:

Needless to say, we crammed a lot into our day trip to Wilmington! We've been rather bogged down by the not-so-fun aspects of Duke/Marine Corps/long distance life recently, so it was really nice to escape it all for a little bit and go somewhere different. Plus, we got a mini-roadtrip together (Jacksonville to Wilmington and back) out of the deal, which equaled almost two hours for me to practice my karaoke... and that, my friends, makes for an exceptionally good day. Trust me :)

Adventures in Tree Hill

Warning- - I'm about to gush about my favorite TV show: One Tree Hill. I realize that 99% of you had no idea the series was still running until now, but that's okay. The remaining 1% of you were the ones who bawled your eyes out alongside me this past week and are more than aware that the number of days until the series finale has officially reached single digits. Seriously, nine days until there will never again be a new episode of One Tree Hill to watch. I'm trying not to think about it. In the meantime, I ventured down to "Tree Hill" this past weekend for a little bit of reminiscing and closure of my own :)

• • • • •

With that being said, here we go: I've conveyed my love for the teen drama/soap opera before. More than once. What you don't know, however, is that I'm not the only one who loves the show. Zach Jones is a One Tree Hill fan.

It's true. See that picture of my One Tree Hill Season 1 collection above? I'm willing to bet that it is one of very few OTH DVDs that has traveled from the States to Afghanistan and back again. I had tried to get Zach to watch an episode or two with me over the years, but he was never really that into it. That is... until he deployed.

The time had come for me to ship Zach's last package & I still had a little bit of empty space at the top. Glancing around my room, I saw the DVDs on my bookshelf & thought, "why not?" Worst case scenario: he doesn't watch them and they end up back on my shelf in a couple of months. Best case scenario: he is so bored out of his mind from standing on guard force for 12 hours straight every day that he watches the entire season and gets hooked. And what do you know... best case scenario totally prevailed! He's watched two more seasons completely on his own since he's been back :)

Ever since then, we've been planning a trip down to Wilmington where the series was filmed. This past Saturday, our schedules finally synched up, so I set out for Jacksonville before the crack of dawn & we made the trek to "Tree Hill" together.

First things first: coffee, obviously :) We hit up Port City Java on the corner of Front & Grace, which was actually the setting of Karen's Cafe in the pilot episode before they built the permanent set. Ironically enough, it becomes the setting of the rival coffee shop that opens in season 9: Tree Hill Cafe.

Directly across the street is the set for Karen's Cafe/Clothes over Bros:

(The outside of the building when I came with my sister three years ago // now)

(Again, the windows three years ago v. a glimpse inside now. Everything's gone!)

We did a lot more wandering around downtown Wilmington:

Row 1: the fountain from Quinn/Jamie's treasure hunt in season 7; the site of the Burning Boat Festival that will be seen in this week's episode :) [view from both sides of the river]
Row 2: tables along the Riverwalk; CD Alley where Max & Chris Keller worked; TRIC

CD Alley used to be an actual record store, but now it's a random souvenir shop. They even carry a little bit of Tree Hill memorabilia :)

After fully exhausting "tourist" mode, we kicked things up a few notches on the creeper-meter and went out in search of the houses where the characters live on the show. You can decide if that makes us a tad stalkerish-obsessive or simply awesome. I'm gonna vote awesome :)

Lucas' (and Karen's) house

Lucas & Karen on the porch during the season 6 finale

Fortunately for us, my bfsb (Lauren) went on a Tree Hill adventure of her own just a couple a weeks ago and informed us that this house is up for sale & nobody is currently living in it. (Her brother lives three doors down, score!) Permission to creep further? Don't mind if I do...

The picture on the right is the side door that was used for Lucas' bedroom.

The next stop was Peyton's house, which actually belongs to author John Jeremiah Sullivan. I took a documentary writing seminar class at Duke last semester & John Jeremiah Sullivan hung out with us for a day. We had to read some of his writings before he came to class, so I naturally selected his most recent piece published in GQ about living in the house while the One Tree Hill cast filmed (the opening line of the article is "Practically every day, cars stop in front of our house and people get out to take pictures of it...") Haha, guilty :)

Brooke & Peyton in front of Peyton's house during season 4

Look at the Sullivan family rocking the Moravian star on their front porch! My hometown is so proud :)

We continued creeping/exploring & found Brooke's house...

I loved the little ball at the bottom of the steps :)

Brooke's house with Felix/Anna's house next door

...as well as Nathan/Dan/Deb's house:

Eek, look at the basketball goal through the arch!

Next, we ventured to the 6th street bridge used in the opening credits:

Had to wait for a red light, obviously. People always leave <3

It was incredibly windy, as well as the strangest combination of nasty raining downpour/gorgeous sun/insane humidity all day long. Nothing left to say but "c'est la vie: my hair is what it is."

While on the bridge, Zach noted that things would be perfect if we had the theme song playing. Why didn't I think of that? Three seconds later, Gavin DeGraw's voice filled the air via my iPhone speakers. I may or may not have sang along...quite dramatically :)

Oops, a little blurry on the left. Gotta focus the self-timer better.

Perfect.

Our last stop in Tree Hill was the home of the River Court, which is super bittersweet because they actually tore it up after they finished filming back in November.

the River Court in 2009

the River Court now... as if a patch of fake grass is really going to make everyone forget it ever existed :(

We love you, River Court! Thanks for the memories & the remaining two episodes that are sure to have me bawling my eyes out all over again <3

And thus concluded our One Tree Hill adventures. No worries; our time in Wilmington was far from over. We spent the afternoon having much more "mature historical adventures" that you'll get to see later this week. Until then, teenage soap opera drama-filled adventures with a side of stalker-creeping it is :)

Friday Miscellany

A real life excerpt of my conversation with Zach last night:

Zach: Oo, tomorrow is Friday! Friday phone dump? I haven't sent you a picture in my cammies since we switched from woodlands to deserts!
Me: What makes you think that your picture is gonna be good enough to make the Friday phone dump? ;)
Zach: Oh, no... that's not what I meant! I just thought of the Friday phone dump, which made me think of cell phone pictures, which made me think that I promised to send you a pic once we switched to deserts last week.

Me: I think you were kind of implying that your picture was going to be in the Friday phone dump.

Zach: I mean, it does make me feel pretty special...

With that being said, dear blog friends, please pay extra attention to picture #6 in the phone dump, taken today specifically for this purpose. Because I'm all about making the boyfriend feel special. And because he does take really cute pictures :)

[Row 1: home for spring break; me, my sister Katherine, & our friend David at camp; green eggs & ham/truffula chip pancakes at IHOP in celebration of The Lorax; Winter Jam with my bff Amy last month]
[Row 2: canvas I made for Zach; my precious boyfriend; & various late night shifts at the Coffeehouse]
[Row 3: unintentional twins with Scott; package from mom; hanging out with Joseph at the Duke Gardens; & the Chapel at night]
[Row 4: my life at the art/printmaking studio, period.]

My life has been pretty hectic the past couple of months, but I have managed to squeeze in a few craft projects here and there... starting with this birthday card I made for Zach's brother last week:

Note the use of maroon & orange in the birthday card: Ben has been accepted to/will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall! :)

Craft project #2: a pretty little flower vase made out of a root beer bottle wrapped in yarn :)

Confession: I made the first one (not pictured above) using mod podge, because mod podge : crafters :: duct tape : rednecks. Essential. Vital. Clearly the best approach to any and all crafting projects. I don't swear (my mother would so not approve), but if I did, I would swear by mod podge.

However (this is really hard for me to admit), mod podge was not the way to go in this project. The top portion of the bottle that is slanted required at least 3x more mod podge than the bottom half, and then it dried darker. Plus it looked crunchy and ugly and not fluffy.

Zach had the audacity to suggest that I use double-sided tape instead of mod podge. Psh, what does he know? So naturally, after telling him that nothing will ever be as good as mod podge, I tried it... and (as you can see above) it turned out wonderfully. Hmph. I'll let you see the mod podge version that still needs an extra layer of mod podge-less yarn just so you can get a good laugh.

Craft project #3: A "Welcome to the World" card for baby Charlie & brand new mom Neidy at Neidy's Infinite Playlist:

Neidy is my blog friend. I used to think the concept of "blog friends" was incredibly bizarre---someone that you've never met & probably never will meet, yet you know so much about each other because you read each others' blogs. Am I right? I was pretty set on only reading blogs of people that I knew, minus big-time blogs like Kelle Hampton's. And then... I got a comment from a girl named Neidy who just happened to stumble across my blog on the week that Zach deployed.

She said something about us being Marine Corps-significant other soul sisters. Intrigued, I clicked on her blog... and was blown away by how much we had in common. She is also in love with a Marine... named Zach. (They got married last year). She loves Jesus. She's super crafty. She studied media arts & minored in design. She loves photography. She's my age. (I told you... crazy similar). And thus, she became my first "blog friend." Her Zach deployed to Afghanistan just a couple of months before my Zach returned, so he's still kicking it over there in the desert. AND, she just gave birth to their first child, Charlie (super adorable baby pics here). Spending the significant portion of a year without the love of your life is pretty blah-awful enough (trust me!); I can't imagine going through the whole "labor & delivery" thing at the same time without him. Mega kudos to Neidy for being a complete rockstar throughout everything!

(PS: It might not look like a typical "Welcome to the World" card, but it's based off Coldplay's latest album cover. Neidy & her Zach love Coldplay, and she even used their most recently released song, "Charlie Brown," to reveal to the blog world that they were having a baby boy named Charlie)

Whew! I sometimes feel like a recap is necessary by the time I make it all the way to the end of a post:

1. My blog friend had a baby.
2. I attempted to cover a bottle with yarn using mod podge.
3. I make birthday cards sometimes.
4. Zach feels special when he's in the Friday phone dump.

;)

Happy weekend!
