I'm simply so, so blessed & grateful for the past year surrounded by wonderful family & friends. Goodbye, 2010. Hello, 2011 :)

Reason #974

Reason #974 I love my boyfriend:

Does that say "soul mate" or what?

Sadly, there is no NCIS or OTH (One Tree Hill) marathon on today, so I'm settling for OTH reruns online.

Zach has a 24-hour duty shift right now, but he's coming to Winston at 7:30AM tomorrow to spend New Years with me! (I was supposed to visit him in Virginia on Christmas, but the snow got in the way. He'll be in Afghanistan next Christmas, so the first Christmas we actually get to see each other will be our FIFTH Christmas together.) I'm beyond excited to see him & spend time with him and my family... and possibly watch some more NCIS :)

Lullaby

Meet Myla.

Myla (the name her great-grandfather used to call her great-grandmother, short for "my love") is my cousin's daughter. She's almost two, my absolute favorite age in the world. I'm not really into the whole baby thing. But ages 2-5... perfect. Absolutely perfect.

This little cutie came up from Florida with her parents and older sister the week before Christmas. We were all hanging out at my house one afternoon, when Myla's mom and another one of my cousins had to go run some errands. Since they were leaving and it was Myla's nap time, I volunteered to put Myla down. Simple, right?

Not so much.

It wasn't awful. But for a good fifteen to twenty minutes, Myla screeeaaamed & cried & wailed for her mommy. I tried everything. I held her. Walked with her. Snuggled with her. Rubbed her back. Talked to her. Sang the typical lullabies. Nothing was working. Until I sang this:

I love John Denver. That's really weird for a 21 year old college student, isn't it? Well, I do. And while Leavin' on a Jet Plane will forever have a special place in my heart, I'm fairly certain Annie's Song is my favorite. It's simply beautiful, and I've always said that it's the song I plan on using as a lullaby for my own kids one day.
Come, let me love you. Let me give my life to you.
Let me drown in your laughter. Let me die in your arms.
Let me stay here beside you. Let me always be with you.
Come, let me love you. Come, love me again.
And after testing it out... I still plan on singing Annie's Song to my babies one day. It most definitely worked!

I mean like, instantaneously worked. I hadn't even finished singing the first line before she had stopped crying completely, and she was asleep before the end of the song. It was magical :)

Looks like I'm not the only John Denver fan in the family :)

Shenanigans

On Thursday night, I went out with a group of my friends from high school. I'm still trying to decide if my favorite part of the evening was:

a. getting ready with Kacey before going out & exchanging Christmas presents

b. hanging out downtown with my beloved class of '08

c. or the fact that I got home WAY past midnight, so it was officially Christmas Eve & I got to move the mouse on our calendar :)

I'm pretty sure they were all equally epic events. I love my best friends :)

Our Christmas Miracle

I'm getting slack on blogging. At least I feel like I have a valid excuse. My Christmas break has pretty much consisted of waking up, going to the hospital, hanging out with Grandpa, and coming home.

Since the freak accident he had while extending the roof over the back deck of his house on the day after Thanksgiving, he's spent 29 days in the hospital, had four surgeries, gotten 64 staples in his head, had pneumonia three different times, and gotten multiple blood clots. He currently has six broken ribs, five broken bones in his back, and four broken bones in his neck. While we're talking numbers, he's also had 131 different people come to visit him, many of them multiple times. My grandpa is kind of a big deal.

We've slowly gone from ICU to Intermediate Care to the trauma floor in the Reynolds Tower at Baptist Hospital. During this entire time, he hasn't been able to speak (the majority of the damage to his brain was in the area that controls communication -- it's expected to heal in 6-8 weeks). Because of all the brain trauma, they have him on medicine to prevent seizures, just in case. But... the medicine makes him incredibly sleepy, and he's pretty much just slept for the past four weeks. Not gonna like, I'm kinda jealous. I could go for a four week nap right about now :)

So imagine our surprise when they brought him back to the room on Wednesday after his fourth surgery and we saw this:

He was awake! And not only awake, but alert! He would reach out and grab our hand when we asked him to, gave us high fives, waved bye to the doctor, and smiled when he recognized people. When we stood around his bed and asked him to look at someone, he would instantly shift his eyes to them. It was super exciting. But the real excitement came yesterday, on Christmas Eve.

He stayed awake pretty much the entire day. He started nodding his head "yes" in response to questions we would ask him, and by the end of the day, he even shook it "no" once. We put his glasses on him and he laid in the bed watching TV -- it looked so normal. When I got there, I told him how handsome I thought he looked in his new mustache & how I thought he should keep it even after he leaves the hospital, and he grinned from ear to ear :)

I also asked him if he wanted "headnocker" or "fodnocker" (kisses on the top of his head or kisses on his forehead).
When I was a little girl, Daddy & I would play a game every week when we would go to Grandma & Grandpa's house; one of us would pick "headnocker" and the other would pick "fodnocker." Without fail, Grandpa would come walking down the hall when he heard us in the living room and say, "Gimme some of that to ol' _________ (headnocker or fodnocker)." Surprisingly enough, he would always choose whatever I had picked, and I would beat Dad. I didn't find out until about three years ago that Grandpa and Dad had the game rigged so I would always win.
Anyway, when I asked Grandpa if he wanted "headnocker" or "fodnocker," he sat there for a minute & then lifted his left hand up and rubbed it very deliberately against his forehead. I gave him lots and lots of fodnocker :)

Later in the afternoon, the nurses came in to put on his back brace & sit him up in a chair for the first time. Grandma was standing next to the chair, and without anyone prompting him or asking him, Grandpa lifted his left arm and put it around Grandma.

Cutest. Thing. Ever.

(I just had the thought that the picture makes it look like he's in a really bad condition. In theory, I guess he is. But this is seriously 1000x better than where he was at a month ago.)

He also lifted his right arm up a little bit, which is a big deal since he hasn't moved it at all in four weeks! Daddy, Grandma, & Grandma's sister were the last to leave the hospital tonight, and Dad said that Grandpa actually mouthed the word "bye" to them. Even if his brain is healed enough for him to talk, he can't speak as long as he has that trach in. Hopefully he'll pass the swallow test soon & they can take him off of it!

No matter what happens this Christmas, having him here with us is the best Christmas present any of us could ever ask for. He really is our own little Christmas miracle.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

My Baby Sister

Corrie & I are 5 years, 4 months, and 8 days apart. We're excellent roomies.

I had my own room growing up, and Katherine shared with Corrie. But when I went to college, Katherine moved into my room, so now I share with Corrie when I come home. The first night I was home on Christmas break (Monday night/Tuesday morning), I woke up early because I was having a nightmare. I don't exactly remember what it was about. I just remember there was blood. And knives. No good.

I woke Corrie up since I was thoroughly freaked out. She wasn't too thrilled, but she stayed up with me. What a sweet sissy :)

Since we bonded during my nightmare scare, we had a Beth/Corrie day. Our lunch date destination? Kimono's, of course. (Katherine can only eat like, three foods in the world, so Kimono's is a rare treat in our family). Loveee it. I also love the fact that Hallmark is next door. Not just any Hallmark. Beth's Hallmark. No lie. When I was five, I just knew that's where I was going to work when I grew up ;)

After Kimono's & Hallmark, it came time for the oh-so-long anticipated "Corrie-gets-to-drive-with-Beth-as-her-legal-adult" car trip. Corrie has her learner's permit, and the law is that she can drive with another licensed driver who has had their license for five or more years. I hit the five year mark last month, so I rode shotgun while Corrie drove us home. It was super monumental. You know... you teach your little sister to tie their shoes, stand outside the bathroom and coach them through their first tampon (that's probably too much information), and now I got to be the legal adult in the car. I should also note that she has become an excellent driver, and I was not scared once. So proud.

I love my baby sister :)

Digital Nativity

It just made me laugh... :)

Mr. & Mrs. Rackley

Amanda & Bobby are officially MARRIED!

Eeek! They're both graduate students in the Divinity School at Duke, and I have been so blessed to watch their relationship from day one. ("Beth, I met this guy & he asked for my number and we're going out to lunch. Facebook stalk him with me!") They are absolutely beautiful people with a huge heart for God & others, and I couldn't be more excited to be a part of their day :)

Yep. That's the only picture I have. And I didn't even take it. Awesome, Beth. I spent the entire evening with my RA loves: Casey, Kevin, & Naomi. I got to see Erik for the first time in exactly a year since he's home from Iraq. I watched Amanda & Bobby's first dance as husband and wife, and the cutting of the cake, and her singing to him. And I don't have pictures of any of it.

At least I drew this to make up for my epic photographing fail. It's fairly realistic. Except I didn't actually wear earrings. And it was raining, so our hair that started out straight pretty much exploded by the end of the night. On second thought, maybe it's a good thing I didn't take any other pictures...

I spent the night in Jacksonville (where the wedding was) and went to church with Zach (who also lives in Jacksonville...) this morning at First Baptist (of Jacksonville, just clarifying). This is our third Christmas as a couple, but the first Christmas Sunday we've ever spent together. Actually, it's the first time we've gotten to see each other during the week of Christmas, period. I love Christmas Sunday & singing all the Christmas hymns, & I was super excited when the service started with my absolute favorite: "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful."

(For years and years, my favorite Christmas hymn was "O Little Town of Bethlehem," but that's only because my name is in the title. No worries. Bethlehem is also mentioned in the first verse of "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful.")

After church, Zach told me he had rented Charlie St. Cloud from redbox and said he'd watch it with me as long as I promised that he was my favorite Zac(h). Sorry, Mr. Efron. Looks like you're gonna have to settle for #2.

Long story short, we stopped the movie after watching it for about twenty minutes. It was sad. I don't like being sad. I'm sure it gets better, obviously. But I really was not into watching a guy work in the graveyard where his little brother was buried, even if the guy was Zac Efron. Last time we rented a movie from redbox in Jacksonville, we watched Up... and I proceeded to cry the absolute hardest I ever have in my entire life. Hmph. We need happier movie selections.

When I got back to Duke, I found this pretty little note tacked on the board outside my door:

Aw, I love my residents. It's so weird without them here --- the dorm is quiet! Haha, I do miss them, though. We close everything tomorrow at noon, and then I am officially on my way to Winston for Christmas break. Thank goodness :)

Book Art Final

Without a doubt, my favorite class this semester has been my book art/typography class. The first half of the semester focused more on fonts/lettering/type face, but the second half focused a lot more on the art of book making. We learned how to literally make books from scratch -- using all different types of binding (stitch, accordion fold, etc.) and about the world of artist books. Seriously, there are people in the world who make a living by designing/creating one book a year and making fifty to a hundred handmade copies of it. The book itself is a work of art; collectors and universities pay thousands of dollars for them!

Which brings me to my "I wish I could do crafts for a living. Actually, maybe I can..." comment from my last post. Do I want to actually make books for a living? No. But, could I? Maybe... :)

It wasn't actually my idea. It was my dad's. For our final project, we had to interview a family member & create a book from the "legends" or family stories they told us. My parents' fairy tale romance has been told countless times, so it seemed only fitting to interview both of them & weave the story together. It's funny to see how they tell some stories the exact same way, and yet some stories are so completely different. I titled my project, "He Says, She Says."

After designing the entire project in Illustrator, I printed the pages out & using my newly-discovered professional paper folding and cutting and gluing techniques, (I'm not lying when I say it's an art...) ended up with my book.

I made two mock copies of the book to get the engineering down right. The pages alternate between a pop-up header...

...and the story that goes along with it. (Note: this is not the story of my parents' first kiss. They'd kill me. This is the "first impressions" section.) The non-pop-up pages have a cut-out in the center, revealing the photos on the inside cover.

All of the text on the left-hand side of the page is directly quoted from the interview with my mom, and all of the text on the right-hand side of the page is directly quoted from the interview with my dad.

I used the accordion fold again, so you can technically expand the book out like this:

Tada :)

The project happened to be due the morning of... my parents' 24th wedding anniversary. How perfect! Since I had talked to my professor beforehand, she graded my book first so I could pick it up from the art studio that afternoon and drive home to Winston to give my parents their gift.

They absolutely loved it! And not like the "we're-your-parents-so-we'd-love-anything-you-made-us" kind of love, either. It was such a hit that my parents have been showing it off & telling other people about it... and they all want one too! (About themselves, obviously.) My father, being the marketing/business guru that he is, already has people lined up who would be willing to pay at least $50 for one. Um, what? That's $1000 for twenty books! Insane.

Am I actually going to do it? I have not the slightest idea. It's fun to think about, though. Dad has been wanting me to open my own graphic design business for a while now (entitled "Simply B," hence the blog name), and has already decided the book art line would be known as the "More Than Words Collection." (And people say I'M the dreamer/visionary...?) Hahaha. He has way more faith in me than I have in myself. And I love him for it.

Who knows. Maybe over Christmas break, I'll bust out the first few books of Simply B's More Than Words Collection. Or maybe I'll just nap. A lot. Both sound rather enticing at this point :)

DIY: T-Shirt Scarf

I'm on Christmas break! Well, not officially, seeing as how I still have to close the dorm on Monday. But I'm done with classes & exams & final critiques :) For the first time in months, I have... free time! So nice. I've been saving up craft project ideas all semester & am really excited to work on some of them.

My project of the day?
A t-shirt scarf.

This was incredibly easy to make, and simply requires four t-shirts & a pair of scissors. I used fabric scissors, obviously, but regular scissors would work.

First, cut the hem off the bottom of the t-shirt & set it aside. (You'll use this later.) Then cut eight strips. Repeat with the remaining three shirts.

Stretch each strip & loop it eight times (like a ponytail holder). Do this with all 32 strips.

Cut the hem into strips about 4''-5'' long & use it to tie the loops together in a double knot.

Tada! Super easy & cute. I know a lot of little girls on my Christmas list who would love this. Actually, I know some big girls who would love it as well... :)

I wish I could do crafts for a living. Actually, maybe I can. More about that in the next post...

A Thousand Miles Seems Pretty Far...

A thousand miles does seems pretty far... but what about

24,972?

That's the number of miles Zach and I have driven (combined) in order to see each other over the past two and a half years. I started keeping a log on my computer back in 2008, and as of last weekend, we can officially say we've driven around the entire world for each other (24,901 miles). While being in a long distance relationship isn't exactly ideal, I try to be a jar-half-full kinda girl, so our little around the world milestone is cute, right?

It can be a little crazy at times -- sometimes driving 5+ hours for 2 hours together. But I know we'd both do it again in a heartbeat; we definitely make the best out of our situation and truly cherish the time we get to spend together. We've gotten to travel to a lot of places in order to visit each other: Baltimore, Roanoke, Raleigh, Jacksonville, Parris Island, Winston-Salem, Durham, & New Bern, just to name a few. It's always fun to add a new city to our map :)

Plus, only two more years until our long distance relationship can turn into a normal relationship. Until then, I guess the next milestone would be the distance to the moon? 238,857 miles. Oh, boy..

Digital Imaging

I spent all weekend working on my digital imaging portfolio that's due this week and...

it's finally done!
(way earlier than expected, too)

Below are some screenshots of the Illustrator files:

a. the introduction / index

b. Logo design for a NGO using the Gestalt theory/principle
(Basically, the abbreviated name of the organization is ECO, with the tagline of "one people. one nature. one world." When turned vertically & read from top to bottom, you can see "ECO." When turned horizontally & read from left to right, you see the silhouette of a face, a tree, and a city, representative of "one people. one nature. one world." Kinda proud of this one...

c. CD Album cover for a band with three colorblind members
(I'm not kidding - that was the assignment. Who comes up with these things...?)
And that's my wonderful friend, David. I used some of the pictures we took together at Susan & Patrick's wedding last summer.

d. Informational poster concerning the BP oil spill in the Gulf
Hahaha. I like this one too :)

e. Eigenface project
We took pictures of everyone in our class and used five of those images to create an "average" face. It's part me... part a bunch of Asians... and part black male.

There were obviously a lot more projects, but those were some of the more fun/creative ones :)

Cannot wait to turn this in & be doneee with one class. Two more typography projects, a chemistry exam, a final critique, and a WEDDING (yay, Amanda & Bobby!) until Christmas break :)
